Top Tips For Reducing Your Yacht Provisioning Carbon Footprint

According to the United Nation’s climate change report, the earth is approximately 1.1°C warmer than it was in the 1800s and greenhouse gas concentrations, already at their highest levels in 2 million years, have continued to rise. On the current path of carbon dioxide emissions, temperature could increase by as much as 4.4°C by the end of the century; and as climate change worsens, dangerous weather events (e.g. intense droughts, storms and heat waves) are likely to become more frequent and severe.

What can we do to help?

To adequately address the climate crisis, we must adapt and pivot our business to reduce our own carbon pollution and prepare for the consequences of global warming. We can also educate our own customers to make smart, “greener” decisions when it comes to yachting provisioning – read on to discover our top tips!

Sustainable, eco-friendly packaging

At Gourmet Deliveries, one of the main ways we try to limit our impact on the environment is by using as much recyclable/recycled packaging as possible.

Cardboard is one of the most commonly used materials in our packaging process as well as aluminium, which can be disposed of in a sustainable manner. We also use special temperature-controlled boxes which can be reused over and over again – The silver thermal liners we use to keep food fresh can also be recycled along with other soft plastics, such as unwanted gel packs.

Ordering yacht provisions in bulk

Another great way to help us lower our carbon footprint is by ordering the items you need in bulk – put a plan in place and think about what yacht provisions you may need for a slightly longer period of time. The aim is to try to reduce the number of deliveries we make, as we often see small orders making their way to yachts on a regular basis – these trips could be minimised by planning ahead and ordering more items in one go.

What about fresh produce?

We understand that fresh produce can perish quickly onboard a yacht, but there are options to freeze certain items (e.g. meat and fish) to keep them fresh for longer.

Ordering yacht provisions in advance

Placing advanced orders may seem like a strange way to be more environmentally friendly. However, by placing an order in advance we can then group the items on your provisioning list with other yachts receiving orders in the same location. This in turn reduces our carbon footprint because we can complete multiple orders during one trip. We can assure you that your delivery will arrive on time, it just gives us the potential to make fewer trips to the same area.

Recycling your provisions packaging

Recycling is a simple undertaking that we hope all of our customers participate in, regardless of whether they are discarding provisioning packaging or any other form of waste.

Recycling our packaging

Our packaging clearly advises users on how they can discard it in the best possible way and most marinas are equipped with comprehensive recycling facilities. Recycling is also aided by buying in bulk as it allows for the reduction of single-use packaging.

We are all aware of the impact our actions have on the environment, so it’s important that where possible we do our bit to reduce our carbon footprint. We hope this article has given you a few things to consider the next time you are ordering your supplies. However, if you would like any more information on our provisioning options or want to place an order, simply contact us today. Our highly experienced team is always on hand to help.
